Homemade Dulce de Leche
Argentina's national sweet spread
Description
Dulce de leche is a traditional Argentinian preparation made from milk and sugar, slowly cooked until obtaining a creamy consistency and characteristic caramel color.
Ingredients
- 2 liters whole milk
- 500g sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 vanilla bean (optional)
- Pinch of salt
Steps
- In a large pot, pour milk and add sugar.
- Dissolve baking soda in a tablespoon of water and add to the mixture.
- If using, add the vanilla bean split in half.
- Bring to medium heat stirring constantly until sugar dissolves.
- Once sugar dissolves, reduce heat to low.
- Cook for 2-3 hours, stirring every 15-20 minutes.
- When it starts to color, stir more frequently.
- It's ready when it reaches a creamy consistency and dark caramel color.
- Remove vanilla bean and transfer to sterilized jars.
- Let cool completely before sealing.
Tips
- Use a non-stick pot for easier cleaning.
- Cooking time may vary depending on pot size.
- Keeps for 1 month in the refrigerator.
